Everyone is advised to brush their teeth at least three times a day or after every meal to avoid teeth damage. However, there are cases where plaque and tartar buildup still occurs. This happens because the mouth and the teeth have bacterial film. The saliva contains calcium needed by the teeth to keep them strong and healthy. As a person eats food, the food is converted into starch or sugar, which then combines with bacteria. As this cycle continues, the teeth are placed in a more acidic environment, which can cause stains and damage to the enamel and even the roots.
It is important, therefore, that regular brushing is complemented by a more thorough dental cleaning such as scaling and polishing. Scaling is a dental process that involves removing the calculus deposits or stains on the teeth. It can be likened to scraping peeling paint on the wall.
Although scaling is performed on the teeth, it can also be applied to the roots particularly in cases when periodontal pockets have already formed. This happens when the bacteria have already invaded the gums. This process is known as root planning.
Scaling is a routine procedure done to remove stubborn tartar and plaque build-up from below the gum line. After scaling, we will polish your teeth with a polishing paste and a rotating rubber cup (similar to an electric toothbrush), to improve the appearance of your teeth and remove bacteria.
Scaling and polishing removes deposits such as plaque and calculus (tartar) from tooth surfaces. Over time, the regular removal of these deposits may reduce gingivitis (a mild form of gum disease) and prevent progression to periodontitis (severe gum disease).
Though not absolutely necessary, polishing teeth after scaling does help to remove stains and remove bacteria from tooth roots that the normal scaling procedure could not reach and remove. Everyone should undergo the polishing procedure because even regular brushing cannot prevent tartar build up.
No, the scaling and polishing procedure shouldn't hurt, but you may feel some unusual sensations in your mouth. This might include a scraping sensation or a tickling feeling in your gums. A numbing gel can be used if you are very nervous about any dental pain.
Yes. A scaling and polishing is not primarily designed to whiten the teeth, as that is what teeth whitening treatments are for. However, a scaling and polishing will in fact leave the teeth looking smooth, shiny, and whiter after the treatment.
To keep your teeth their glossy best, Nedu The Dentist recommends a cleaning that includes scaling and polishing “every 6 months”. “No two patients are the same. For those who accumulate buildup faster, have periodontal issues, or periodontal disease, we may recommend polishing up to every 2-3 months.”
After the scaling treatment, you may experience sensitivity and some bleeding, which is quite normal. You can brush your teeth using a soft-bristled toothbrush in gentle circular strokes. You must patiently brush your teeth, moving slowly and deliberately.
A total scaling and polishing or teeth cleaning treatment with us will take anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour. (The duration depends on the overall health of your mouth.) Your first appointment will usually take 30 minutes, and if further treatment is needed we can discuss further treatment plans.
